10 Reasons to Consider Baqueira Beret in the Spanish Pyrenees for a Ski Holiday

  • Serious contender for Europe's best kept secret as an alternative to the Alps: genuine Spanish culture combined with a surprisingly large and high quality ski area
  • Convenient purpose-built resort with great lift access from most hotels, thanks to a handy gondola extension right into the heart of the village
  • Stunning mountain scenery and the attractive newer builds distract sufficiently from the 80’s blocks that house much of the most convenient accommodation
  • 157km of well linked pistes spread across the 3 main valleys between Beret, Baqueira and Bonaigua with a good balance of beginner slopes, extensive intermediate cruising and plenty to challenge the experts including some lovely itinerary runs, awesome off piste and affordable and large scale heli skiing
  • Fantastic Spanish food on and off the mountain with everything from hearty local Arenese mountain fayre through to some serious gourmet options, all at sensible prices - for apres think tapas and Tempranillo
  • They may be close, but it’s nothing at all like Andorra! Prices are great but otherwise Baqueira has a chic following - the Spanish Royal family ski here
  • We have found Toulouse to be a great airport to fly into - small enough to avoid the Geneva overcrowding but with a reasonable selection of flights with Easyjet and British Airways
  • At 2 hours plus it’s not the shortest transfer but with good flight times and a convenient resort setup we think it’s a great option for short breaks as well as having plenty to recommend it for a full week-long stay
  • Great non-skiing activities including the opportunity to drive your own snowmobile or get a ride on a huski-drawn sled through stunning scenery to the abandoned village of Montgarri for a wonderful meal at the remote refuge
  • Good ski schools and excellent mountain guide set ups - we have a great local partner in Kabi for organising these, as well as heli skiing and other mountain based activities like the trip up to Montgarri
  • Village Altitude: 1500m
  • Top lift altitude: 2510m
  • Transfer times:
    Toulouse 2hrs to 2hrs30m

Auberge de La Maison

Chalet Val de Ruda

Charming traditional chalet style hotel unique in Baqueira - think cosy woody finish, romantic open fires and very friendly staff in traditional local dress. There is also a lovely spa. The hotel has a variety of rooms, all individually furnished with lots exposed wood and traditional touches. Due to the classic styling of the building many rooms are under eaves. It is just 250m to the closest ski lift. The hot chocolate stand at the entrance for returning skiers was a lovely touch on our last visit!
