We’re Taking Knightsbridge to Courmayeur
December 2, 2013
Today marked the first preparation for what is going to be the most amazing celebration of food by Britain’s top chefs in the Italian alps, the Mountain Gourmet Ski Experience curated by Heston Blumenthal and fellow chefs Marcus Wareing and Sat Bains.
My meeting today with Marcus Wareing and his team involved discussing menus and logistics as they get ready to put together an amazing meal at La Chaumiere mountain restaurant, which our guests will access by cable car.
Allow me to introduce the team. Photographed below from left to right: Shane Moyne, yours truly, Shauna Caithness, Mark Froydenlund – head chef at the Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley – and the great Marcus Wareing.
Having spoken to them all at length today, the consensus is that they couldn’t be more excited. Can you imagine two more different working environments for these great chefs; from the refined comfort of their Knightsbridge operation, to the side of a mountain on an Italy ski holiday?
So what are they going to cook?
Despite sending over some local ingredients from Courmayeur and the Aosta Valley to start the process of inspiration, the guys from the Michelin-starred Berkeley restaurant weren’t letting much on.
I did manage to get out of them that they’re thinking of creating their own version of the Italian classic, tiramisu. Perhaps this will be the start of a friendly rivalry between Italian chefs and these Brits – the plan is that next year some big name Italian chefs will come over to Courmayeur and take on these boys. Bring it on!
The first night of our memorable three-day ski weekend and eating experience will see Marcus, Sat and Heston dine with the guests. Which means those in attendance will not only be sampling the skills of these excellent chefs first-hand – they’ll also get to enjoy their company, too. On the second and third night, the guests will split into two smaller groups and enjoy two other gourmet dinners (cooked by Sat and Marcus respectively) via cable car and snowmobile transfer.
During the day on Monday whilst skiing, you will stop off and taste a hot chocolate created by Heston Blumenthal. For those fitter intermediates, you’ll also have the chance to ski the legendary 17km off-piste run down to Chamonix, the Vallée Blanche, with a gourmet picnic prepared by one of the celebrity chefs. For those who have never put skis or snowboards on before, we’ll also be laying on complimentary lessons.
One person I’m looking forward to introducing to snowsports is skiing-novice Sat Bains, whom with his wife Amanda are the proprietors of Sat Bains with Rooms in Nottingham.
This is going to be an experience coming at you from every angle. What’s more, it’s being promoted by our partners at The Daily Telegraph, so get booking now before all the spaces go. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Goodbye Knightsbridge. Hello Courmayeur.
