As the summer begins to emerge in the Alps, we are starting to pack our skis away until next season. But, if you’re not ready for ski season to end, there’s still some great glacier skiing in France, Switzerland, and Italy.
I’d like to share a few of this year’s holiday trends with you, so let’s take a glimpse at what’s been hot (or cold) in 2018.
Top Ski Resorts in the Alps
According to a 2018 readers’ poll at Snowplaza.co.uk, the most popular ski area in the Alps is Les Trois Vallees.
Les Trois Vallees is one of France’s largest ski areas encompassing over 600 km of slopes that includes resorts like Courchevel, Meribel, Val Thorens, and more.
With tons of high-altitude slopes, particularly in Val Thorens, you can ski well into the spring. You may even find us still carving some late season turns.
In recent years, the snowfall in Europe hasn’t quite been what we’ve been used to. Poor snowfall at key times has left some people worried they’ll have no snow on their ski holiday which has led to high-altitude resorts, like Cervinia and Val Thorens, becoming increasingly popular.
It’s tempting to book a ski trip during the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays, but if you’re after better snow and fewer crowds, book your ski holiday in January. Many ski holidays across the Alps have heavily invested in snowmaking, so you don’t even have to worry about no snow.
In 2018, we’ve seen a shift from France and Switzerland towards Italy and Austria because of price point and value comparison with the weakening exchange rate. Of course, good options are still available in France and Switzerland. Just ask us about accommodation at Hotel Terrace in Engelberg, which offers a free ski pass deal making for a really competitive option for a ski weekend in Switzerland.
The Rise of Theme Ski Holidays
People have been taking ski holidays for decades, but it’s no longer just about booking a package holiday and skiing all day long. People want more—great skiing, luxury resorts, the best restaurants, experienced ski instructors and every amenity you could ever imagine. In 2018, we’ve seen the rise of original concept ski holidays such as Gourmet Ski Experience, alpine music festivals, and more.
We celebrated five years of our Gourmet Ski Experience this past year. Curated by Heston Blumenthal in 2013, Gourmet Ski Experience is a unique weekend, designed especially for foodies and also welcoming many first-time skiers.
This year, guests from the UK, Canada, Dubai, the USA, and Italy joined Michelin Star chefs like Jason Atherton, Claude Bosi and Sat Bains in Courmayeur at the foot of Mont Blanc. Stay tuned for more details about our 2019 Gourmet Ski Experience, but between you and me, we can confirm that Tom Kerridge will be joining the Gourmet Ski Experience for the first time.
For 2019, The City Ski Championships will be celebrating its twentieth birthday and, after seven successful years in Crans Montana and Verbier, will be returning to its birthplace of Courmayeur with some excellent value packages—almost at 20 years ago prices. The multi-day event consists of specialised ski clinics, slalom races, aprés ski, and much more.
Many skiers are now looking for performance-related trips, like racing, off-piste, or skiing with famous skiers. Plenty of ski resorts offer these special trips, and we can help you organise them.
In the recent years, we’ve seen more and more people choose environmentally-friendly ski resorts. Ski resorts have been slow to adapt to more eco-friendly technologies, but with the realities of climate change, there is an increased effort to go green.
Switzerland has become the leader in Europe with resorts like Saas Fee, Villars, and Anzere. Saas Fee is one of the greenest ski resorts in the world, and it was recently awarded the “Energy Town” status by EnergieSchweiz.
The Weekend Mountain Getaway
With many different commitments and time being sparse, sometimes you just can’t get away for a week-long holiday. With regular short flights from the UK, weekend mountain getaways are becoming increasingly popular. In 2018, we saw more people going on short breaks in addition to their standard week-long holiday with family and friends that they’ve always done.
Momentum Ski specialises in the weekend ski getaway and offers some of the best packages around for a group or corporate trip, family short break, or even a romantic getaway with your partner. A short three- or four-night getaway is the perfect way to get your ski fix if you don’t have time for a full week.
Our packages include everything from your flights, accommodations, ski passes, restaurant reservations, and more. Just because you may be short on time, doesn’t mean we short you on the experience you’ve come to know and love from Momentum Ski.
Rent Your Skis
Renting your skis has become increasingly popular over owning and bringing your own ski equipment because with many airlines ski carriage now costs more than a week’s rental. The increase in demand at rental shops has improved the quality of ski equipment available.
Several companies are now offering ski transport services, like First Luggage and Sherpa, in case you prefer your own ski equipment. These companies will pick up your ski equipment from your front door, deliver it anywhere in the world and will have it waiting at your destination. If you have your own skis, we recommend you book flights with our partner airline Swiss, currently the only major airline offering inclusive ski carriage, which can be a huge saving.
If you are looking to buy any gear, don’t forget that as a Momentum Ski client you will get a 15% discount at our partners Snow & Rock.
